The Perfect Draft

December 17th, 2009 | by Ted Carlson |

If you could perform your 2009 fantasy football draft again, is there any chance you could have picked the following guys in these rounds? Or, more importantly, does this bit of hindsight tell us anything about how to prepare for 2010 drafts?

Round 1: Chris Johnson
Round 2: Andre Johnson
Round 3: Wes Welker (or Marques Colston or Roddy White)
Round 4: Ray Rice
Round 5: Aaron Rodgers
Round 6: DeSean Jackson
Round 7: Matt Schaub
Round 8: Rashard Mendenhall
Round 9: Ricky Williams
Round 10: Miles Austin
Round 11: Vernon Davis
Round 12: Jamaal Charles

To me, the most interesting part of this “perfect” draft is the fact that this team would have taken three receivers over the opening six rounds. Owners typically prefer to load up on running backs, but the 2009 season was particularly awful for second- and third-round rushers: Marion Barber, Clinton Portis, Ronnie Brown, Brandon Jacobs, Frank Gore, Kevin Smith, Steve Slaton, Pierre Thomas, Jonathan Stewart… see what I’m saying? There are some hits in there, but the owners who opened RB-WR-WR or RB-WR-QB likely came out ahead.
